OUR HOME TOWN by Ina Selfridge Golden Waves WIFE |
Our little town has a population of approximately 300 people- more or less.
That doesn't count the "town cat" who belongs to nobody but eats with several of the town's people and anyone who brings an unwanted scrap of food out of the cafe. She makes the rounds each day to socialize with her friends who seem to always provide her favorite foods. There once was "town dog" which had puppies frequently and was such a favorite someone adopted her and took her to the country as a playmate for their kids. I don't think she was ever counted in the town census either. Probably a mistake since everyone in the area knew her and fed her on occasion. Both the cat and dog knew how to get along apparently.

OUR TOWN is situated on a paved highway
.
and has three streets running south to north

There is a farmers co-op-the biggest business in town. An Airport. |

An Implement Dealer, and a Hometown Cafe
|

a church, and an elementary school. |

A grocery store(it was on national TV when it opened and is now closed due to lack of business) and a senior center-where retired people meet each Monday at noon to socialize

A library (its in the front of the city building-on the left in the picture and a fire station staffed with well trained local volunteer fire fighters.
An insurance agency, an implement part store, two banks and an emergency medical service staffed with dedicated volunteers, a well equipped ambulance, and a rescue vehicle.
The really cool thing about "our town" is everybody knows everybody. People wave when they meet you as you drive your car or pickup down a road or street. When there is a ball game or play at the school almost everybody goes to watch-because they know the kids, their parents and many times --their grandparents! People watch the seasons go by as they see the farmers and ranchers with their tractors, trucks, pickups and trailers doing their farm and ranch work. It is a local form of entertainment and the town's people enjoy that part of the rural scene. When one of our people die the church is likely to be filled with neighbors and friends who come to celebrate the life of their friend and share the sadness of the family. There will be a meal provided for the grieving family and many of those who come to the service will bring a "covered dish". There is always plenty of food-no matter how big the family happens to be. Our people are like that.
Our town is similar to many country towns, of course. However each small town is unique due to the real live characters living in the town and the surrounding area.
In OUR TOWN most of them are REAL CHARACTERS.
